Drawing inspiration from my toys and Pez collection, I set up a small "stage" to create scenes.  In "Whispers",  3 Princess Leia Pez appear to be two woman talking about a third woman as she is just out of ear shot.  In "Gossip" the conversation is taking a unpleasant turn as the two women confide what they think they know to a third person.  Casting the Pez as characters in a play had the odd effect of giving each duplicate a unique look even though they are exact copies.  Exploring human situations through inanimate objects facilitates the task of sharpening my observing and rendering skills.

Snow Mack's Pez collection
I started collecting Pez in 2004 to use on frames.  I had a system of bidding on large lots on Ebay, only bidding up to a few cents per items that I wanted.  It was always fun to get the large boxes with many mystery items, usually the photos showed a pile of Pez without an exact list of items.  I concentrated on Star Wars Pez for a series of Star Wars characters to be framed in Pez.

How I Make My Frames

1/14/2013

I began making frames for my art in the early 90's.  The concept for the frames was inspired by an abstract painter's gallery exhibit in Santa Monica.  The simple paintings were presented in elaborate frames.  I decided I wanted my frames to give the illusion of being elaborate, ornate and beyond the norm.  I experimented with small toys, cast offs and bits and pieces from everyday life.  After attaching the objects to the frame, a coat of gold paint transforms the ordinary into a surreal device. The frames have an energy that comes from the human transference of special meaning onto things from our lives.  The frames evoke memories of dreams, childhood and travels.  I continue to collect items for future frames and will gladly accept donations.

Usually, I do not design the frame until I have completed a painting.  Sometimes the painting will inspire the items used on the frame or the items are chosen at random to create the best design.  From experience, I find small lightweight toys and objects work best.  If an item is heavy I will secure it to the frame.  For the most part, the items are arranged and placed onto the frame covered with texture paste.  I buy white Texture Paste at Nova Color.  Before spraying the frame with Montana Gold spray paint, I use masking tape to cover any items I do not want painted then gesso everything and allow to dry before spraying.  Work in a well ventilated area with the Texture Paste.  I only use the spray paint outside.  Avoid working in humid conditions.  Also, do not allow pets into the room when the paint is wet!
