Shri Yama is available as a print to mark its 35th anniversary, painted in 1991. Shri Yama was purchased by Dan Akroyd in 1993 for the original House of Blues Boston, from an exhibit at LA Luz de Jesus, Los Angeles, CA. It was part of a four-woman exhibit titled "Women on the Verge" curated by Billy Shire. I am not sure if the original painting survived. I read that all the artwork from the original House of Blues, Boston, was moved to New Orleans and placed in storage there, awaiting return to a renovated House of Blues Boston. Hurricane Katrina destroyed the New Orleans storage facility and left most of the artwork beyond repair.
About this painting:
The symbology in this painting is not intended to be strictly Christian. The cross represents the four cardinal points, the intersection of the horizontal (temporal) and vertical (spiritual) worlds. Numbers are written on the cross, beginning with the symbol for infinity and continuing to 33 and ending with a question mark. This painting was autobiographical at that time; I contemplated being 33 and my place in the world as a young wife, mother, painter, singer, graphic designer, and scenic artist.
Shri Yama, represented by the skeleton, is the Hindu deity of death, justice, and Dharma (duty), often regarded as the first mortal to die and subsequently guide others to the afterlife. He rules over Naraka (the underworld) and is tasked with judging souls based on their actions. The horses are guardians and offer a swift retreat if that becomes the best option. The crow is the observer and judge. The crow has excellent survival skills.
Paintings from the late 80's and 90's were influenced by my life in Los Angeles, Dia de Los Muertos, and our time living in an Ashram in South Fallsburg, New York. I often wrote on the canvas, adding text to expand the meaning. "Shri Yama" has the text "Who am I, What am I, When am I, Where am I, Why am I?". This text continues to be relevant for me 35 years later, only softer and no longer urgent. Time has penciled in notes, the answers evolving in surprising ways.
