"Firewater" is an autobiographical painting about my time living in Saigon, Viet Nam from 1963 - 1964. The imagery of the horse running down the street was an event I witnessed from the balcony of our house. The scene was utter chaos as people were scattering, running and screaming after the horse. The image also documents other elements that have stayed with me since childhood. Even though I was only 5 years old, I remember going to the market with my Mother. We would stop by a store that sold pet fish; the walls were lined with shelves with dark blue glasses containing Siamese Fighting Fish. Our neighbors played Louis Armstrong "I Found My Thrill On Blueberry Hill" at top volume, over and over. We lived next door to the Prime Minister. There was a coupe and a huge angry mob stormed his house. Eventually, we were evacuated and flew back to the United States.
